abstract = "The pelagic area is inhabited by organisms that depend on water
masses which have characteristics most appropriate to its life
cycle. To develop a partitioning of pelagic habitats it is crucial
to consider that the ocean is not homogeneous and the distribution
of these habitats varies in space and time. Therefore, to make a
clustering analysis close to reality, it is necessary that the
dynamic nature of the ocean to be included in the study. The aim
of this work was to characterize the spatio-temporal distribution
of pelagic habitats in the Brazilian coast using satellite and
modeled data. For this work, we used the following data: surface
chlorophyll-a concentration, sea surface temperature, bathymetry,
primary production and nitrate climatology. The region was defined
between 5ºN to 35ºS and 53º to 33ºW, and the period was defined as
2005 to 2010, with a total of 72 images of each variable. For the
proposed goal, it was possible to discern the spatial-temporal
distribution of a total of five persistent pelagic habitats on the
Brazilian coast by using satellite data and in situ data, and also
by using the k-mean method. These five habitats varied little in
size over the years but it is possible to observe differences at
the location of the clusters, thus illustrating the importance of
studying the spatial-temporal dynamics by defining the pelagic
habitats. A greater seasonality is observed for clusters related
to the Amazon River mouth and the water mass at the Western
                         Equatorial Atlantic.",
